About
Dr. John C. Thomas is a Professor in the Department of Counselor Education and Family Studies at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. He has served as both Chair of the department and Ph.D. Program Director.
Dr. Thomas also maintains a private practice with Advanced Psychotherapeutics in Lynchburg, VA. Prior to joining the faculty at Liberty University, Dr. Thomas’ diverse professional background includes being an internal Employee Assistance Consultant (EAC) with DuPont in Waynesboro, Virginia for over twelve years. He has also served as clinical director of the Lexington/Richland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council in Columbia, South Carolina, and was formerly an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina where he also supervised master and doctoral students. Dr. Thomas has also directed the counseling and psychology program at Florida Bible College.
John C. Thomas holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Counseling and a Graduate Certificate in Alcohol and Drug Studies from the University of South Carolina. He received his Masters of Arts in Counseling and Bachelor of Science from Liberty University. Dr. Thomas also holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology from Capella University. He has additional graduate work at James Madison University, Asbury Seminary, and Richmont Graduate School.
John is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC, VA), Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC, VA), Certified Sex Therapist (ABCST), and Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT). His professional credentials have included Certified Employee Assistance Consultant (CEAP), and a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapist (AAMFT). Professional memberships include American Counseling Association (ACA) and the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC). He has also been a member of the Employee Assistance Professional Association (EAPA) and the Organizational Development Association.
Dr. Thomas is the editor and contributor to "Counseling Techniques: A Comprehensive Resource for Christian Counselors" by Zondervan, the co-author of "Enduring Your Season of Suffering" (Liberty Press), "What’s Good about Feeling Bad: Finding Purpose and a Path through Suffering" (Tyndale), and "Therapeutic Expeditions: Equipping the Christian Counselor for the Journey" (Broadman & Holdman Academics). He has also authored many professional publications as well as two curriculum series with Hatherleigh Press.
John and his wife, Denise conduct marriage enrichment retreats throughout the country and abroad. He also speaks on mental health and organizational issues in the community and across the country. In his “free time,” John plays tennis and reads. John, along with his wife, Denise and their two adult children reside in Lynchburg, Virginia. They have two adult children, Katie and Stephen. They have adopted a fourth Greyhound along with two other dogs.
