Abstract

Historically, those impacted by Compulsive Sexual Behavior disorder, problematic sexual behavior or sex addiction have been widely viewed through the lens of an addiction or disease model. Recent advances around understanding the betrayed partner or spouse in this system have not only assisted that individual but have also added to and improved the potential outcomes for everyone in the system. First developed in 2012, the Multidimensional Partner Trauma Model © provides a thorough framework for assisting the partner, the person with the "addiction" and ultimately the entire system. Grounded in a trauma resolution model developed by Judith Herman (1997), the MPTM identifies the various areas of focus throughout treatment and/or support. The MPTM does not assume addiction or disorder but identifies the main shared experiences of sexual deception, sexual secrets, and sexual betrayal. This presentation will (a) explore the historical development of a comprehensive treatment/recovery model (b) introduce the MPTM, (c) provide survey results as to the model's effectiveness as reported by those who do the work and (d) offer an illustrative case example. This talk will also encourage future research on effectiveness and will identify gaps in our knowledge.
