Abstract

Therapy is more effective when counselors have a roadmap that explains how a client’s problems developed and directs where the client needs to go for growth and healing. Developing a strong theoretically-based conceptualization, and using it to inform treatment, can be challenging. Participants will learn the steps for effectively conceptualizing clients from major theoretical viewpoints, including cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and client-centered. The presenters will review how each major theory explains the causes of mental health problems. Then, the presenters will use a case study to show how treatment goals and interventions are derived from the theoretical approach.
