Abstract

Robert Kaplan’s writing echoes some of the familiar motifs of literature – particularly the epic or the quest. This is his personal journey, like Marlow’s in The Heart of Darkness or Dante’s in The Inferno. The first chapter title refers to Laurence Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy (1768).
