Abstract
Librarians, of all people, understand the power of books, but do we acknowledge the power of books as social experiences? Do we see the potential for personal, professional, and spiritual growth through book discussions? Are we harnessing our profession’s primary commodity, books, to meet organizational needs, or are we relying solely on speakers, conferences, webinars, meetings, and committees? In an environment of increasing scarcity of professional development funding, have we considered the richness of the books at our fingertips? In this workshop, learn how our library implemented book clubs for library personnel using fiction and non-fiction books to improve organizational culture, build relationships, foster Christian discipleship, develop and enhance competencies, wrestle with cultural issues, and improve soft skills. Workshop presenters will share their experiences participating in and leading book clubs as well as lessons learned, benefits (both expected and unexpected), and most successful structures. Workshop participants will leave with a deeper appreciation for the value book clubs can bring to an organization and the tools to start their own workplace book club program.
