With Crisis Comes Opportunity: Counseling Children and Adolescents in the Aftermath of a Disaster

Abstract

The Chinese word konjii represents both danger and opportunity. This presentation will focus on the opportunity that exists for counseling children and adolescents who are experiencing a crisis, have experienced a crisis, or have observed a crisis. Symptoms of stress in children and teens will be identified. Proactive prevention programs will be introduced as will research-based interventions. Participants will be actively engaged through small and large group discussion, experiential exercises, and application to case scenarios. Handouts will be provided.
